FDEE

The eval engineer role nobody talks about

In short: Forward Deployed Eval Engineers keep production agents accurate, safe, and compliant after go-live through continuous evaluation, guardrails, and drift monitoring.

Build is only half the job

Teams celebrate when an agent passes a demo. Six weeks later, model updates, data drift, and new edge cases erode accuracy, often silently. Someone has to notice before a customer or regulator does.

That someone is an FDEE. They embed alongside FDEs and own the eval layer as a first-class engineering discipline.

What FDEEs build

  • Eval harnesses tied to business outcomes, not vanity accuracy scores
  • Policy guardrails for regulated workflows
  • Drift detection and regression alerts in production
  • Compliance reporting for security and legal review
  • Iteration loops as models and products change

Why this isn't traditional QA

Agent behavior is non-deterministic and context-dependent. Offline test suites miss production failure modes. FDEEs design continuous, production-grounded evaluation: closer to SRE for AI than manual QA checklists.
